Morse taper
Standardized form Interface for tooling on machine tools, such as CNC machining centers.
The name comes from the tool company Morse, which laid the foundation for this interface already in the 19th century.
The Morse taper or Morse taper contains either a tool holder to hold the tool securely or is firmly connected to the tool. The interface to the machine consists of an elongated cone with a relatively small angle of inclination. The drive torque is transmitted by the friction of the conical surface.
There are 7 standardized basic sizes (MK0-MK6) as well as various intermediate sizes. In CNC woodworking machines, the MK2 size is almost exclusively used.
Currently, Morse tapers are mainly used in the drilling machine, as they require additional screw locking and are therefore not suitable for automatic tool changers on CNC machining centers. Already in the 1990s, Morse tapers were largely replaced by ISO30 and ISO40 tool interfaces.
